Washcloths for Baby

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! I hope y'all had a good holiday with friends and family! My kitchen is still under construction, but mostly done. Because we're still in the process of putting it together I did zero Thanksgiving cooking.

I did manage to get some sewing done. Remember last weeks post 'Over the Moon' well while making the changing pad covers I ended up with eight 7x7 squares of flannel scraps. I hate for fabric to go to waste, so I scoured Pinterest for some inspiration.

I found a cute tutorial on making baby washcloths at https://gluesticksblog.com/decorative-wash-cloths/

I thought, what a cute idea, I'll do my own version.

I went to the Dollar Tree to get some washcloths and realized, I could get some terry cloth hand towels for the same price but twice as much fabric. I bought four because I didn't know how many I'd need, (I don't know if it's pregnancy brain or what, but I've been struggling to math lately) turns out two was more than enough. I could cut six 7x7 washcloths out of one hand towel. If you do a larger washcloth it'll take more terry cloth.

Of course I chose the 100% cotton hand towels I didn't pre-wash them because terry cloth frays, a lot. And flannel picks everything up, so I figured I'd wash them after sewing them up.

I used my little 7x7 piece of flannel as the pattern and cut out eight terry cloth squares avoiding the binding. Trust me, you won't need it.

The terry cloth doesn't have a right or wrong side, so just pick one to be your right side. And if course right sides down together, sew around the entire square at 3/8 of an inch.

Make sure to leave a small opening for turning later.

Clip the corners like so, we do this so when you turn it right side out you get a nice point in the corner.

Then you'll want to turn it right side out. I like to use a wood chopstick to turn my items. I like them because they're blunt and I can really push those corners into points without puncturing the fabric. I buy my chopsticks from Daiso, but you can use the cheepy ones leftover from takeout if you like. Those work too.

Once turned you'll want to do a nice topstitch around all the edges. Typically a top stitch is 1/8 to 1/4 away from the edge in a slightly wider stitch (for example, on my machineI sew at at 2.5 or a 3 and topstitchat a 4). Not only will that close up the gap we left to turn it, but it also just gives it a nice finish.

And there you have it!!! Not only do you now have cute little washcloths, but you've used up all of your fabric scraps.

Well that's all for this week! Currently I'm at 37 weeks so realistically Baby could arrive any day now. So if I suddenly stop posting that's why. Honestly both excited and nervous to be meeting Baby, but I know it's all gonna work out. I've got the best Hubby, he's so supportive, I know we can do this!

So barring Baby's arrival I'll see you next week!
